Gender norms and cultural expectations continue to influence how individuals experience autonomy, safety, and equal opportunities in society. While traditions preserve identity and values, some norms may unintentionally perpetuate inequality and limit awareness of personal rights and boundaries. Misconceptions surrounding consent remain common, especially among youth, where social expectations often shape attitudes and behavior. These challenges highlight the importance of education in promoting equality, respect, and awareness of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). In commemoration of International Women’s Day, SCORP and SCORA CIMSA FK Universitas Riau organized CONSENT (Choosing Our Narratives Through Sexual Equality and Norms Transformation) as an educational initiative aimed at encouraging critical reflection on gender norms and promoting sexual equality.
The CONSENT project aimed to improve participants’ understanding of consent as a foundation of respectful interaction and human dignity. The activity sought to raise awareness about the impact of gender norms on daily life and decision-making while promoting healthy communication and gender sensitivity. Additionally, the program encouraged participants to challenge harmful stereotypes, develop critical thinking skills, and foster inclusive perspectives that support equality and mutual respect within their communities.
The activity was conducted on Saturday, March 28th 2026, at the Auditorium, 2nd Floor of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Riau. The program began with an opening session led by the master of ceremony, followed by welcoming remarks and a prayer session. A plaque exchange was carried out as a form of appreciation toward institutional partners and speakers. Participants completed a pre-test before attending an educational session discussing consent, gender equality, and norms transformation. After the material delivery, a post-test was conducted to evaluate participants’ knowledge improvement. The activity continued with a Focus Group Discussion involving mind mapping and interactive games, allowing participants to collaboratively analyze real-life situations related to consent and gender norms. Each group then presented their discussion results, followed by a reward session and a closing group photo.
The activity successfully enhanced participants’ awareness of consent and its relationship with gender equality. Participants demonstrated improved understanding of personal boundaries, respectful communication, and the influence of societal norms on behavior and health outcomes. The discussions encouraged empathy and critical thinking, inspiring participants to challenge normalized harmful practices and promote equality within their social environments.
Through CONSENT, SCORP and SCORA CIMSA FK Universitas Riau reaffirmed their commitment to promoting SRHR education and human rights awareness. By empowering individuals to choose their own narratives and transform societal norms, the program emphasized that education and collective awareness are essential steps toward building safer, more inclusive, and equitable communities.
